MBT Workshop: New Applications of Mentalization-based Treatment

Date: November 30 - December 02, 2026
Place: Silver Hill New York, 515 Madison Avenue, 13 Floor, New York, NY, 10022
Originally evidence-based and utilized in the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD), mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is now the most empirically supported therapy for antisocial personality disorder (AsPD). As a highly flexible, exploratory, and process-focused form of psychotherapy, the use and applications of MBT are wide-ranging and ever-expanding. For the first time ever, this workshop will bring together three cutting-edge directions in the evolution of MBT, led by the original developers of these adaptations: MBT for trauma (MBT-TF), MBT for narcissism (MBT-N), and MBT self-help (MBT-SH).

On Day 1, Bob Drozek, LICSW, and Brandon Unruh, MD, will review the theory and treatment principles of MBT for narcissism, with an emphasis on treating alexithymia and teleological self-esteem. On Day 2, Bob Drozek will introduce a new method of teaching patients how to self-apply the strategies of MBT in their everyday lives, specifically to address insecure attachment, excessive certainty, intellectualization, and problems with empathy. On Day 3, Peter Fonagy, PhD, co-developer and lead theoretician of MBT, will illustrate the core treatment techniques of MBT for trauma, giving participants a behind the scenes look into the current multi-site research protocol.

All workshops will involve a lively mix of didactics, participant discussion, case presentations, and attendee role-plays. On each day of the workshop, attendees will receive a complimentary physical book focused on the MBT application being presented—three books in total—to take home and use in their clinical practice.
