Target Audience
Event Learning Objectives
- Describe the core theoretical principles and treatment structure of mentalization-based treatment for pathological narcissism (MBT-N), including the relationship between pathological narcissism and impairments in mentalizing.
- Identify and differentiate key features of pathological narcissism, including patterns of mentalizing associated with alexithymia, teleological self-esteem, and teleological shame, and apply these concepts to clinical assessment and diagnosis-giving
- Demonstrate the use of MBT-N interventions to address alexithymia, teleological self-esteem, and teleological shame, including use of the affect elaboration pathway to facilitate more nuanced understanding of affective experience.
- Differentiate clinician-directed and patient-directed MBT resources and identify ways to teach patients practical mentalizing skills that can be used both within and outside of therapy sessions.
- Describe and demonstrate strategies for teaching patients to engage more effectively in therapy, modify maladaptive attachment patterns, and recognize and respond to shifts in their mentalizing capacity.
- Identify and apply interventions that help patients address certainty and concreteness and move out of pretend mode, using specific strategies to promote more flexible, reality-based mentalizing.
